GRP grating & flooring

GRP grating panels
and flooring systems.

Select the surface. Engineer the floor.

Open-mesh and solid-top GRP flooring for access routes, working areas and service openings. Match the panel, support and fixing arrangement to the people, loads and environment.

Choose by the application

Which grating suits the task?

Start with the walking surface and the opening size. Then establish the structural arrangement: panel thickness is only one part of the decision.

Engineering the installed floor

From walking surface
to supporting structure.

Loading & deflection

State the distributed load, concentrated loads and their contact areas, clear span and deflection criterion. Include equipment, wheeled loads and temporary construction use where relevant.

Support & cut-outs

Set bearing lengths, support lines and panel orientation. Penetrations and removable panels change the load path; resolve trimmed edges and support continuity before fabrication.

Fixings & substrate

Select panel hold-downs separately from anchors into concrete, steel or other substrates. Check the substrate condition, edge distances, embedment and corrosion exposure. Agree site pull tests where the anchor design or substrate uncertainty requires them.

Inspection & replacement

Allow access to fixings, drains and services. Record panel identification, permitted use and replacement details in the handover information.

Material & performance

Specify the conditions.
Check the evidence.

The same mesh can be offered with different resin, surface and structural characteristics. Name the required performance and match the evidence to the actual product.

Slip resistance & cleaning

Assess the walking surface in the expected wet, dry or contaminated condition. Ask for the relevant test report, surface finish and cleaning regime; a grit finish does not establish performance under every contaminant.

Chemical & marine exposure

Specify the substances, concentrations, temperature and contact duration. Review resin suitability and all metallic connections as well as the grating itself.

Fire & specialist environments

Define the required reaction-to-fire, smoke or other project criteria before selecting a resin. Request evidence for the exact product and test scope; do not transfer a classification between different grating systems.

Standards & design basis

For permanent access to machinery, consider ISO 14122-2:2016 within its defined scope alongside Part 1. Agree the applicable design basis and project requirements. Referencing a standard is not a claim that every panel or installation meets it. Read the standard’s scope →

From GRP grating panels to an installed floor.

A panel purchase and an installed flooring package need different information. Start with the application and known design inputs, then identify the preparation and site work you need included.

Buying panels to an agreed specification

State the product family, mesh, panel depth, finish, dimensions and quantity. Include delivery location and required date, then confirm availability and lead time against the actual order. Use GRP Express for a defined materials requirement.

Cut-to-size grating and openings

Provide a numbered layout with support lines, overall dimensions, penetrations and removable panels. Agree cut-edge treatment and fixing positions before preparation. Cutting a panel can alter its support requirements, so an outline drawing alone does not establish capacity.

Checking GRP grating load capacity?

Ask for data matching the exact product, span and support arrangement. State point loads and contact areas as well as distributed loads; do not select a panel on thickness alone. The load-capacity and span guidance explains the information needed for review.

Before you specify.

Can grating replace an existing steel floor?

Start with a survey of the supports, clear spans, levels and fixing positions. Check the proposed panels and their restraints for the required loads; matching the old panel thickness is not a design check.

Does a finer mesh carry more load?

Mesh aperture alone does not determine capacity. Use the load information for the exact panel construction, depth, span and support condition.

Can panels be cut around services?

Coordinate openings with the panel layout and support design. Agree cutting, edge treatment and restraint details before manufacture or site alteration.

What should I send for a review?

A plan with dimensions and support positions, required loads, service openings, photographs of the substrate and the exposure conditions. Mark unknown information so it can be resolved during review.
