GRP platforms, stairs & maintenance access
Reach the plant.
Plan the work.
Fixed and mobile access packages for waste and recycling facilities. Coordinate the working position, machinery interfaces and maintenance route with the site’s operating requirements.

Design around the task
Connect the route
to the working position.
Identify the inspection, cleaning and maintenance activities at each location. The access layout needs to account for tools, handling space and the interfaces with the operating plant.
Plant-side platforms
Provide a defined working position beside equipment. Coordinate the frame, deck, guarding and access transitions with the maintenance envelope.
Explore →Stairs & local access
Connect floor levels and working areas. Review landings, headroom and the space required to move tools and components.
Explore →Flooring & walkways
Develop the route between tasks. Select the surface and panel arrangement against contamination, drainage, loading and cleaning requirements.

Fixed location.
Or controlled movement.
A mobile platform introduces requirements beyond the standing surface. Agree how the unit is moved, positioned, secured and used at each working location.
Fixed access
Coordinate permanent supports and anchors with the existing asset. Resolve the working height, reach, guarding and access route in the accepted layout.
- Survey the supporting structure and local geometry.
- Define loads and serviceability requirements.
- Keep machinery and maintenance clearances visible.
- Plan inspection of connections and supports.
Mobile access
Define the permitted operating positions and ground conditions. Review stability, wheel or castor selection, restraint and the method of moving the unit.
- Identify slopes, thresholds and travel routes.
- Agree the operating load and working envelope.
- Specify the positioning and securing arrangements.
- Provide the agreed use and inspection instructions.
Engineering inputs
Design the assembly
for the actual duty.
Bring the plant layout, access tasks and exposure conditions into one brief. The walking surface, frame, connections and supporting asset all contribute to the finished arrangement.
Geometry & equipment
Show the service points, door swings, removal routes and restricted areas. Record level changes, headroom and any provisional survey information.
Loads & stability
Identify people, tools, components and handling loads. Review the relevant lateral and environmental actions; mobile units also need their operating stability assessed.
Substrate & connections
Confirm the support material and condition. Resolve anchors, bearing, edge distances and conflicts with buried or embedded services.
Contamination & cleaning
Identify liquids, oils, debris and cleaning chemicals. Review surface, drainage and resin compatibility against the conditions rather than relying on a general anti-slip or corrosion-resistance description.
Openings & guarding
Coordinate penetrations, access gates and removable sections. Review fall protection and the interface with machinery guarding as distinct requirements.
Inspection & repair
Allow access to the parts that need checking. Agree how damage, loose connections or changes in the plant arrangement are reported and assessed.
Working around machinery
Make the access support
the safe system of work.
An access platform provides a working position; it does not replace the plant’s guarding, isolation or maintenance procedures.
Before the task
Coordinate access with the site’s isolation and permit arrangements. Identify moving parts, stored energy and any equipment that must remain inaccessible.
During the task
Allow space for the work and component handling. Plan protection where panels or guarding are removed and keep the route clear of temporary obstructions.
Returning to service
Include restoration of panels and guarding in the agreed work procedure. Check the access arrangement before it returns to its normal use.
The HSE machinery-safety guidance for waste and recycling covers maintenance access and isolation considerations. Use it alongside the equipment instructions and the site’s task-specific arrangements.

Relevant project experience
A coordinated package
for SUEZ Southend.
Vital’s published project record describes a package of 13 GRP access structures for the Southend waste and recycling facility: five mobile access platforms, four fixed access platforms and four stairs.
The fabrication and delivery imagery shows how different access requirements were brought into one package. Use the full case study to explore the project context and recorded scope.
Prepare the next step
Bring the layout
and the task together.
Start with the geometry and access requirements, then develop the structural and material information needed for the proposal.
Questions before the access package is specified.
Can one mobile platform serve several machines?
Define every intended working position and travel route. The design review needs to consider geometry, ground conditions, stability and the operating requirements at each location.
Does open-mesh flooring remove the need for cleaning?
No. Review debris, contamination and cleaning access as part of the surface selection and maintenance arrangements.
Can an access platform replace machinery guarding?
These are separate functions. Coordinate the platform with the machine’s safeguarding requirements and the site’s isolation and maintenance procedures.
What should we include in the enquiry?
Send the plant layout, working heights, access tasks and load requirements. Include the exposure conditions, fixed or mobile preference, site restrictions and delivery programme.

Show us the working area.
Develop the access package.
Send the layout and maintenance requirements. Ask Vital to review the access options, structural interfaces and information needed for a coordinated proposal.
