Start with the package boundary

The location alone
does not define the duty.

Access within a nuclear project can serve different areas, functions and operating conditions. Ask the project team to identify the classification and requirements that apply to the particular package.

Identify the responsible designer, acceptance authority and specification revisions before the technical proposal is fixed. Any specialist qualification must be established for the selected product and arrangement.

Design basis

Make each requirement
traceable to the design.

Bring the intended access task and asset interfaces into the same review as the material specification. Record unknowns and the actions needed to resolve them.

Geometry & interfaces

Provide plans, sections, levels and equipment information with revisions. Coordinate service penetrations, maintenance clearances and the supporting structure.

Loading & serviceability

Define pedestrian, equipment and concentrated loads, temporary installation demands and guarding duties. Agree the structural and serviceability criteria for the complete arrangement.

Material & environment

Identify temperature, chemical exposure, cleaning and any specialist environmental conditions. Request evidence appropriate to those conditions; general product data may not establish suitability for every location.

Fire & specialist qualification

State the required performance and acceptance criteria. Where fire, seismic, radiation or other specialist requirements apply, agree the necessary evidence with the project before selecting or approving the material.

Connections & substrate

Review support reactions, local capacity, anchor selection and installation access. Establish investigation and testing requirements where the supporting information is incomplete.

Changes & substitutions

Agree how design changes and proposed substitutions are reviewed. Keep the accepted material and component specification aligned with the drawings released for fabrication.

Develop the coordinated design information →

Quality requirements & standards

Agree what applies
to this supply package.

Project requirements determine the quality controls and evidence needed. Confirm them at enquiry stage so they can be included in the proposed delivery scope.

ISO 19443:2018 addresses quality management for organisations supplying products and services important to nuclear safety. Its applicability and the project’s requirements need to be established for the package. This reference does not state that Vital holds ISO 19443 certification.

Customer requirements

Provide the procurement specification, applicable quality requirements and required deliverables. Identify approval stages and any customer inspection or witness points.

Product information

Agree the material and component identification, applicable test information and records required from the supply chain. Define the level of traceability the project expects.

Acceptance criteria

Set measurable inspection and acceptance requirements before fabrication. Agree how non-conformances, repairs or concessions must be reviewed and recorded.

Review supplier credentials and request technical information →

A connected information record

Keep the specification
with the finished assembly.

Define the required record set early. The purpose is to connect what was specified, what was supplied and what was inspected.

Design record

Accepted drawings, calculations where required, component specifications and the agreed interface information.

Supply & inspection

The required material identification, inspection records and evidence of the agreed checks and release points.

Handover information

The completed arrangement, maintenance information, use restrictions and the process for reviewing later alterations.

Controlled delivery

Plan the release
before the site window.

Information readiness

Agree the information and approvals required before manufacture. Resolve interface questions early enough to protect the fabrication and delivery programme.

Identification & logistics

Coordinate module identification, packaging, transport, storage and handling with the site requirements. Include access restrictions and installation sequencing.

Inspection & handover

Complete the agreed checks and document any restrictions before release. Keep the handover information connected to the accepted design and supplied components.

Project context & next steps

Bring the requirements
into the first discussion.

Use the design and assurance routes to establish the requirements for your application, including the package classification, material acceptance and required records.

Planning GRP access for Sizewell C

For a prospective Sizewell C access package, define the intended location and function, project classification, design criteria and acceptance process. Vital’s Essex-based team can discuss platforms, walkways, stairs and guarding against the actual enquiry, with fabrication and delivery planned around the agreed information release.

Coordinate the access package

Provide drawings, maintenance tasks, interfaces, loads and required design deliverables.

Project experience · Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

GRP access infrastructure
at Barakah.

Vital’s published project account records the supply of GRP access platforms and walkways with key-clamp handrails for the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant project in Abu Dhabi.

The package brought flooring, supporting components and edge protection together for pedestrian and maintenance access. The project account identifies corrosion resistance, component handling and a modular arrangement as material-selection considerations.

For a comparable enquiry, define the location and function of the access package, support interfaces, environmental conditions and required acceptance records. Previous supply to a nuclear site does not establish qualification for every nuclear application.

Your project requirements

Establish the package classification, design basis and acceptance process before material selection.

Questions before the nuclear package moves forward.

Does a nuclear-site location establish product qualification?

No. Qualification and acceptance depend on the package function, location and project requirements. Establish these before selecting the product and evidence.

Can standard product information be used?

It can support the initial review, but the project must establish whether it is sufficient for the intended application and what additional evidence is required.

What records should be requested?

Agree the design, material identification, inspection and handover deliverables with the project team. The required depth depends on the package specification.

What should the enquiry include?

Send the scope, drawings, intended duty, classification and applicable specifications. Include the quality requirements, acceptance stages and programme, and identify unresolved inputs.
