GRP industrial access systems
Access the plant.
Support the task.
Platforms, walkways, stairs and guarding around industrial equipment. Develop the working position, structural connections and maintenance route as one coordinated package.

Start with the maintenance activity
Give each task
the access it needs.
Routine inspection, component replacement and movement between plant areas need different arrangements. Identify the people, tools and equipment involved before choosing the platform footprint.
Equipment platforms
Position operators beside valves, instruments and service points. Coordinate reach, working height, guarding and the space needed to carry out the task.
Explore the system →Walkways & crossings
Connect work areas across pipes, ducts and changes in level. Resolve the onward route and the support positions as well as the crossing itself.
Explore the system →Flooring & replacement
Review existing floors, supporting steelwork and exposure when replacing damaged or corroded surfaces. Establish the support and connection detail for the new deck.
Explore the system →
Work envelope & coordination
Make room for the work,
not just the person.
Operating position
Locate controls, inspection points and serviceable components. Check the position in which the task is performed, including headroom and the equipment carried to it.
Replacement route
Identify the largest component that must be removed. Coordinate lifting space, gates and clear openings, and define any designed removable sections before manufacture.
Adjacent operations
Review moving plant, vehicle routes, hot surfaces and services with the site team. The access structure must fit the operating arrangement and agreed controls.
Cleaning & drainage
Plan for likely contamination and cleaning access. Consider the consequences of material or liquid passing through open mesh to the area below.
The complete load path
Specify the structure
behind the walking surface.
A grating thickness or load-table value cannot establish the capacity of the complete installation. Review the deck, frame, connections and supporting asset together.
Deck
Span, bearing, cut-outs and local loads.
Load into the frame →Frame
Members, bracing and stability.
Forces into connections →Connections
Bolts, joints, anchors and restraint.
Reactions into the asset →Supporting asset
Substrate condition and local capacity.
Complete the design reviewLoads & serviceability
Identify people, tools, maintenance equipment and concentrated loads. Define any temporary installation loads separately. Agree deflection criteria and the conditions for release into service.
Existing structure
Provide survey information and available records. Check support locations, substrate condition and the local effects of new reactions. Specify investigation or anchor testing where required by the design.
Exposure & material choice
Identify chemicals, temperature, moisture, UV exposure and cleaning regimes. Match material data to the specific conditions rather than assuming all GRP products perform alike.
Surface & guarding
Coordinate slip evidence, deck openings, edges, gates and guarding loads. Review the consequences of falling objects and the use of the space beneath the access structure.
Machinery access & standards
Choose the route
for the real duty.
Access frequency, height, available space and carried equipment influence the choice between stairs, a stepover and fixed ladder access. Review the complete journey to and from the working position.
ISO 14122-2:2016 addresses working platforms and walkways used as permanent access to machinery. Its scope can include a building or civil structure whose main function is to provide that machinery access. Confirm applicability and the current project requirements with the designer.
The selected access arrangement also needs the relevant review of stairs, ladders, guarding and the surrounding site conditions. A standard reference is a design input, not a claim that every proposed arrangement is compliant.

Installation planning
Bring the shutdown
into the design discussion.
Work windows, delivery routes and operating restrictions can influence module sizes and connection details. Raise these constraints before the drawing package is released.
Survey & information release
Agree what must be measured, the equipment state during survey and the revision used for coordination. Mark unknowns and assign the actions needed to close them.
Fabrication & handling
Plan component identification, transport, storage and handling. Confirm the available installation space and the sequence for connecting modules to the existing structure.
Site checks & handover
Define the inspections before use and record any agreed restrictions. Provide the maintenance and inspection information needed to manage the installed system through its service life.
Review installation delivery, competence and the site work arrangements together.
Develop the package
Connect the site brief
to the technical detail.
Use the design resources to organise the information and the project example to see an industrial application in context.

Questions before the industrial package moves forward.
Can GRP replace an existing steel floor?
A replacement proposal needs a review of the remaining supports, loads, environment and connection detail. Match the new deck and its support arrangement to the actual duty.
Can the platform be adapted around existing services?
Use a coordinated survey to establish service locations, clearances and maintenance needs. Resolve cut-outs, support continuity and access zones before manufacture.
Does a machinery-access standard apply to every walkway?
Applicability depends on the purpose and location of the access. Confirm the relevant standards and asset requirements for the specific arrangement with the designer.
What information should we send first?
Send the plant layout, photographs, working height, maintenance task and known loads. Include the equipment removal requirements, exposure and planned work window.
