GRP maintenance platforms, gantries & machine access
GRP maintenance platforms.
Gantries and machine access.
Reach the equipment. Make room to work.
GRP plant access platforms designed around the maintenance task, equipment clearances and supporting structure. Coordinate the working position, walking route and access for replacement parts in one layout.

Start with the maintenance task
Access that fits
the work being done.
A platform gives people somewhere to stand. A useful access system also gives them room to inspect, operate, remove and replace equipment. Define those tasks with the maintenance team before drawing the perimeter.
Routine inspection
Locate controls, gauges, inspection points and isolation positions. Establish how often the route is used and what the operator carries.
Service & repair
Show open panels, tools and the space needed to work. Include the equipment manufacturer’s maintenance envelopes and restrictions.
Replacement & removal
Plan the route for filters, motors and other components. Identify lifting points, temporary openings and any platform parts that must be removed.
A continuous gantry may serve several machines; a local platform may suit a single working position. Compare the route length, elevation changes, obstructions and maintenance tasks before choosing the arrangement. For ground-level movement between assets, see discuss the pedestrian access route.

The equipment has to remain serviceable
Open the doors.
Check the working space.
Overlay the proposed platform on the equipment layout in plan and section. Show doors and covers in their open positions, overhead services and the route beyond the working area.
Distinguish space for a person from space for the task. A cabinet door may fit, while the component behind it still cannot be removed. Resolve that difference with the equipment supplier and maintenance team.
| Design interface | Information to agree | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Working level | Equipment datum, reach positions, floor falls and finished surface. | Establishes the relationship between the person and the task. |
| Door & service envelope | Swept areas, access panels, component withdrawal and headroom. | Keeps the platform from obstructing maintenance. |
| Circulation | Clear route, passing or turning needs and tools being carried. | Connects working positions without relying on equipment clearances. |
| Removable zones | Panel size, restraint, lifting method and temporary edge protection. | Allows planned access without uncontrolled structural alterations. |
Deck, frame, bracing and receiving asset
Design the load path.
Resolve the fixing detail.
The usable platform depends on the complete assembly. Agree the loads and support conditions before selecting a deck thickness or borrowing a detail from another installation.
Working loads
Define distributed and concentrated loads, people, tools and any authorised handling equipment. Record temporary maintenance loads separately; an access platform is not automatically a storage or lifting platform.
Frame & deck
Set the support centres, spans, bearing and restraint. Check members, connections, bracing and deflection together, including any cantilevered working areas or interrupted decking.
Supporting substrate
Identify concrete, masonry, steelwork or other receiving material and its condition. Confirm available dimensions, buried services and restrictions on drilling or loading existing assets.
Anchor selection & pull tests
Specify the fixing for the actual substrate, reactions, edge distances and installation conditions. Where information is uncertain, agree investigations and any required pull tests with the responsible designer; testing needs a defined purpose and acceptance basis.
Guarding & access
Coordinate guardrail loads, openings, gates, stairs and landings with the frame. Keep hand support continuous where required and resolve transitions at each approach.
Choose for the environment
Specify the surface.
Check the exposure.
Open mesh, finer mesh and solid surfaces serve different needs. Compare drainage, dropped-object risks, cleaning access and the work below the platform alongside structural performance.
Surface & contamination
Identify water, oil, dust or process residue. Request slip evidence for the selected finish and relevant conditions, and plan how the route will be cleaned.
Material & surroundings
Confirm resin, temperature and chemical exposure for the selected GRP. Review metal fixings and adjacent assets too; material choice alone does not establish an electrically safe assembly.
Applicable criteria
ISO 14122-2:2016 covers permanent working platforms and walkways for machinery access within its scope. Agree the applicable standards, project criteria and required evidence before finalising geometry.
Machinery access, general building circulation and means of escape can have different requirements. Identify the purpose of the route early. Use the Assurance Centre to request the relevant product and design information.

Project application
Dense plant.
A coordinated route.
The Dornan data-centre case study shows platforms, steps and ramps coordinated around HVAC plant. It is a useful example of resolving equipment interfaces within a constrained working environment.
For another industrial setting, see the British Sugar Wissington platform.
Survey & coordinate
Confirm the equipment revision, levels and receiving structure. Agree who resolves interfaces with the plant supplier and asset owner.
Fabricate & install
Choose practical assembly sizes for transport and access. Coordinate isolation, temporary access and the site work sequence before delivery.
Inspect & hand over
Complete the specified installation checks and record accepted changes. Pass the permitted use, drawings and maintenance requirements to the asset team.
Industrial maintenance platform installation
Define the work package before the shutdown.
Bring the maintenance team, plant supplier and installation team into the same brief. Vital can coordinate a bespoke GRP platform from survey and design through fabrication and installation, with responsibilities and site constraints agreed before work starts.
Machinery and production lines
Identify service points, isolation positions, guards and component withdrawal routes. Agree how maintenance access will be separated from operating machinery and which tasks require a shutdown. A platform must not obstruct existing controls, guards or emergency routes.
HVAC and building services
Show filter and coil removal zones, access doors, pipes, cable routes and surrounding equipment. Coordinate local platforms with stairs and connecting walkways so maintenance teams can reach each working position with the tools they need.
Process and treatment equipment
Record washdown, chemical exposure and drainage alongside the access geometry. Where the task concerns filtration equipment, see Mecana access platforms; for wider operating conditions, explore water and wastewater access.
Agree the installation responsibilities
Confirm who provides isolations, permits, temporary access, lifting and any civil works. Check delivery and handling routes against proposed module sizes. Agree inspection stages, handover information and the date the asset must return to service. Meet Vital’s directly employed installation team →
Prepare a comparable quotation brief
Send the plant layout, working levels, photographs, loads and service clearances, together with available installation windows. Mark unknown dimensions and identify existing supports that need investigation. Ask for survey, design, fabrication, delivery and installation scope to be identified so the proposal covers the complete requirement.
Turn the layout into a clear brief.
For wider process-site constraints, explore industrial access systems.
Include a plan, section, equipment service envelope, photographs and the supporting structure. Mark information still to be confirmed. For work around operational equipment, review installation support for operating sites and training and competence.
Questions before you specify.
Can the platform be fixed to existing plant?
Only where the equipment supplier and responsible designer accept the connection and resulting loads. Independent supports may be needed. Provide the available plant drawings for review.
Can sections be removable?
Yes, where designed for that purpose. Define panel restraint, handling, temporary protection and the conditions for removal and reinstatement.
Will GRP solve a corrosion problem?
Material selection must reflect the actual chemicals, concentrations, temperatures and exposure. Include connections and the existing asset in the assessment.
What should we send for a proposal?
Send the maintenance task, equipment layout, levels, photographs, load requirements and access constraints. A marked-up plan is useful even while some inputs remain unresolved.
Send the plant layout.
Resolve the access.
Ask Vital to review your working positions, equipment clearances and support arrangement. Include the tasks the platform must enable so the proposal addresses the complete maintenance route.
