GRP water-treatment & Mecana filter platforms

Reach the process.
Plan the maintenance.

GRP access platforms around filters, tanks and treatment equipment. Coordinate the operator’s route with valves, covers, lifting space and the structure supporting the assembly.

Bring the process team into the layout

Work around the plant.
Keep access practical.

The access brief starts with the equipment and its operating tasks. Identify what needs reading, adjusting, sampling, cleaning or removing, and where people need to stand to do it.

Filters & treatment units

Show inspection positions, opening covers and the equipment supplier’s service envelope. Keep room for the parts and tools used during maintenance.

Tanks & process channels

Coordinate the route with edges, pipes, valves and existing crossings. Review the complete work area and the site’s access and protection requirements.

Pumps & service equipment

Identify isolation points, component withdrawal and lifting access. Check that supporting members do not obstruct the next maintenance intervention.

A Mecana filter platform is one application within this wider access requirement. The filter model, surrounding process layout and site conditions establish the actual design brief. Mecana is a third-party filtration equipment name; Vital supplies the access infrastructure around the unit, not the filtration equipment. Explore the wider water and wastewater sector alongside the platform requirements.

Plan how the equipment will be opened

Keep the access.
Resolve the opening.

Show hinged covers, removable panels and equipment openings on the same drawing as the walking surface. Confirm what remains usable while maintenance is taking place and what must be isolated or protected.

Review removable sections as designed components: weight, lifting method, identification, restraint and reinstatement all need to be understood. A cut-out also changes the deck and support arrangement.

Confirm what carries the platform

Support the assembly.
Understand the asset.

Concrete walls, slabs and existing steelwork can present very different fixing conditions. Establish the receiving structure and connection forces before finalising the fabrication.

Levels & geometry

Survey finished levels, channel walls, pipes, nearby equipment and the route to the platform. Record the datum and drawing revision so different suppliers coordinate against the same information.

Loads & deflection

Define people, tools, handling loads and any equipment carried by the platform. Include guardrail actions, removable zones and required serviceability criteria. Equipment support is a separate requirement from personnel access.

Substrate condition

Identify the substrate, available thickness, condition, reinforcement or other drilling constraints. Resolve deteriorated concrete, unknown construction or restricted anchor positions before selecting the detail.

Fixings & investigation

Choose anchors for the substrate, forces and exposure. Agree any required site investigation or pull testing with the responsible designer, including the test purpose, locations and acceptance basis.

Bearing & restraint

Coordinate deck spans, support lines, bracing and panel retention. Check that future pipe or equipment changes do not remove a support or leave an unreviewed opening.

Water, cleaning and process exposure

Specify for the site.
Plan for service.

The words “water treatment” do not define a single exposure. Describe the chemicals, cleaning methods, temperature and operating conditions for the actual location.

Materials & connections

Request suitability information for the selected resin and exposure. Include metallic fixings and adjacent materials in the review; avoid assuming all GRP products offer the same resistance.

Surface & housekeeping

Assess wet use, process residue, footwear and cleaning access. Choose the mesh and finish with slip evidence, drainage and dropped-object risks in mind.

Design requirements

For machinery access within its scope, ISO 14122-2:2016 addresses permanent working platforms and walkways. Record the applicable project, operator and access requirements as well.

Where materials may contact drinking water, identify the required approval and evidence for that exact use. Neither a GRP description nor an installation photograph establishes suitability for drinking-water contact. Request the relevant technical information.

Installation within a working treatment site

Coordinate the work.
Protect the process.

Agree access restrictions, isolations, delivery routes and lifting arrangements with the operator. Confirm how the work area will be separated and whether the installation needs a planned outage.

Choose supply-only or supply-and-install, with a platform, stairs, ladders, gates and guarding coordinated to the agreed scope. Plan sectional or phased delivery around the live process. Choose assembly sizes that can reach the location and be safely positioned. A complete fabrication may reduce connections on site, but the transport route and available lifting space need to support that choice.

Plan installation on an operating site →

Before fabrication

Close the equipment interfaces, survey discrepancies and fixing design. Issue the agreed revision with component identification and assembly requirements.

Before release

Complete the specified checks on anchors, bracing, bearing, panel restraint, stairs and guarding. Record the accepted arrangement and any approved changes.

Through the asset life

Retain drawings, product references and inspection information. Review altered pipework, loading or cleaning chemicals before relying on the original design.

Send the equipment arrangement, cover movements, pipe layout and available structural information. Add site photographs and explain the maintenance operation. Use CAD and structural design support to agree the coordinated deliverables, and training and competence to support the installation brief.

Questions before you specify.

Is there one standard Mecana platform size?

The filter model, access task and surrounding works determine the layout. Provide the supplier’s equipment drawings and site information so the interfaces can be coordinated.

Can the frame sit on an existing channel wall?

Subject to assessment of the wall and proposed reactions and anchors. The available substrate dimensions and condition need to be established first.

Can panels be removed for maintenance?

Where the design provides for it. Agree the lifting method, temporary protection, identification and restraint before specifying removable sections.

Does GRP automatically suit every treatment chemical?

No. Assess the exact resin and connection materials against the chemicals, concentrations, temperatures and exposure. Request applicable evidence.

Can you plan around a live process?

The installation proposal can be coordinated with operator restrictions, access and outage requirements. Agree these constraints early so fabrication and site sequencing reflect them.
