GRP workshop & vehicle-maintenance access

Reach the work.
Connect the workshop.

GRP platforms, flooring, stairs and local covers for transport-maintenance environments. Coordinate the working position with the vehicle, equipment and workshop route.

Vehicle & equipment interfaces

Make the clearances
visible in the design.

A platform that fits one vehicle may not suit another. Include the intended fleet or equipment range and the relevant operating conditions in the brief.

Vehicle envelope

Show the working height, body profile, doors and service panels. Account for the vehicle positions and conditions relevant to the task.

Workshop equipment

Coordinate lifts, jacks, extraction, hoses and handling equipment. Keep the access structure distinct from equipment designed to support or lift a vehicle.

People & movement

Allow working space, escape routes and movement of tools or parts. Coordinate mobile units with the floor condition and the method of positioning and securing them.

Pits, covers & removable panels

Resolve the opening
in every working state.

Closed & loaded

Define who or what can pass over the cover. State any wheel, point or equipment loads and require evidence for the complete cover-and-support arrangement.

Open & in use

Agree how the opening is accessed and protected. Coordinate the cover-handling method, storage position and clear working route.

Supports & fit

Survey dimensions, levels and the support condition. Resolve bearing, restraint, joints and transitions to the surrounding floor.

Inspection & maintenance

Provide access to inspect the supports and connections. Include the intended opening sequence and limitations in the handover information.

Engineering inputs

Specify the complete
access arrangement.

Bring geometry, loading, exposure and operating requirements together. The selected panel is one part of the structural and functional design.

Loads & serviceability

Define personnel, tools and component-handling loads. Separate vehicle-support or lifting duties from pedestrian access requirements.

Frame & connections

Resolve spans, bracing, support reactions and restraint. Confirm the existing substrate, anchor geometry and any required verification or testing.

Surface & contamination

Review oils, water, cleaning agents and debris. Select the surface and drainage arrangement against the actual workshop conditions.

Electrical interfaces

For work involving electrical systems, provide the relevant requirements and procedures. A GRP material description does not establish an electrically rated working platform.

Guarding & transitions

Coordinate edges, gates, steps and access points with the vehicle and equipment arrangement. Identify openings created during maintenance.

Change of use

Record the intended vehicle range, positions and loads. Review changes to the fleet, equipment or operating task before assuming the access arrangement remains suitable.

Installation & operation

Fit the package
to the workshop programme.

Coordinate delivery, installation and inspection with the operational site. Agree the temporary arrangements needed while the new access is being put in place.

Before installation

Confirm the survey, accepted drawings and support information. Plan access to the work area and the separation from workshop activities.

During the work

Coordinate handling and assembly with the site team. Protect openings and adjacent equipment, and complete the specified connection and support checks.

At handover

Provide the agreed as-built and inspection information. Include permitted use, maintenance needs and the review process for later changes.

The HSE guidance on falls in motor vehicle repair addresses vehicle access and inspection-pit openings. Coordinate the access design with the site’s wider safe working arrangements.

Questions before the workshop package is specified.

Can an access platform support a vehicle?

Do not assume this. Vehicle support and lifting are separate duties requiring appropriate equipment and evidence. State any such requirement explicitly.

Can a mobile platform serve different vehicles?

Define the intended vehicles and working positions. Review the clearances, stability, floor conditions and positioning arrangements for each use.

Are pit covers suitable for workshop traffic?

Specify the actual pedestrian, equipment or vehicle loads. The cover, frame and supports need evidence for that duty and arrangement.

What information helps us start?

Send the layout, vehicle range, working heights, tasks and load requirements. Include pit details, contamination, equipment interfaces and the programme.
