GRP Industrial Access Systems →
GRP Washdown-area access platforms
Washdown access.
Plan for cleaning as well as work.
Plan GRP washdown-area platforms around the cleaning regime, maintenance task and hygiene boundaries.
Choose the access area.
Equipment service positions
Locate standing space from the actual access panel, valve or inspection task. Include equipment doors and the tools carried to the position. Keep the route clear of hoses and avoid narrowing it when machinery is opened for cleaning.
Explore the system →Draining walking surfaces
Coordinate the grating with the drainage and contamination strategy. Open mesh can allow water and small objects to pass through; assess the consequences below. A finer mesh or solid surface brings different retention and drainage considerations.
Explore the system →Cleanable supports and steps
Leave room to inspect and clean beneath landings and around support bases. Review ledges, fastener recesses and sheltered areas where residue could remain. Treat the whole assembly as part of the cleaning layout, not just the top surface.
Explore the system →Choose the system around the duty.
Walking surface
Select grating construction, mesh and finish for the operating conditions, span and objects that must be retained.
View the product guidance →Complete access assembly
Coordinate the platform, stairs and guarding around the working position and approach route.
View the product guidance →Support connections
Define bearing, restraint, brackets and anchors against the assessed supporting structure.
View the product guidance →Build the brief around the working task.
Plan GRP washdown-area platforms around the cleaning regime, maintenance task and hygiene boundaries. Water, cleaning chemicals and residues affect the surface, supports and details differently. A useful arrangement gives operators stable access while leaving equipment and the floor below accessible for cleaning. Establish whether the platform sits over open product, beside enclosed plant or in a utility zone before selecting the material and mesh.
Start with the site information
Bring plans, photographs and the equipment supplier’s maintenance clearances. Identify the working position, the route used to reach it and the supporting structure. Vital can help coordinate survey, design information, fabrication and installation around that brief.
Survey and site capture →Resolve the interfaces before fabrication.
Cleaning chemistry
Provide product names, concentration, contact time, rinse method and temperature. Check the selected resin, finish and connection materials against the full cycle rather than a single cleaning chemical.
Hygiene zoning
Record product exposure and the site’s hygiene specification. Standard GRP is not automatically a food-contact material or a hygienically certified assembly. Locate access outside sensitive product zones where the layout allows.
Wet-footwear conditions
Define water, fats, detergents and other residues expected on the surface. Request relevant slip evidence and agree inspection and cleaning of the walking surface.
Specify the complete load path.
Make the loading explicit
Include operators, tools, cleaning equipment and any portable units placed on the platform. Record hose forces or local equipment loads where relevant, alongside span and deflection requirements.
Review the design requirements →Check the support and fixing detail
Check the substrate and any floor coating before selecting anchors. Keep exposed fasteners compatible with the cleaning chemistry, and agree sealing or detailing needed around penetrations.
Request the supporting information →Plan the installation and the next maintenance visit.
Coordinate installation with production cleaning and restart. Control drilling debris and cutting dust, protect nearby equipment and inspect the completed assembly for inaccessible residue traps. Record the cleaning assumptions at handover.
CAD, structural design and BIM →What should the handover retain?
Keep the agreed drawings, component identification, permitted use, inspection information and maintenance instructions together. Record how future alterations to services, equipment or supports will be reviewed before work starts.
Survey, design and installation support →Connect the specification with the evidence.
Standards and site requirements
For permanent machinery access, establish which parts of BS EN ISO 14122 apply to the proposed route, working platform, stairs, guarding or fixed ladder. Agree structural actions, serviceability and the project’s accepted design basis separately. The access standard does not establish the capacity of the selected GRP members, connections or supporting asset.
Define the package boundary
The access package supports the site’s hygiene plan but does not certify the production process, food contact or cleaning validation. Agree those requirements with the responsible hygiene and production teams.
Questions to resolve before ordering.
Can grating be installed above open product?
Only after the contamination and hygiene requirements have been assessed. Mesh allows material to pass through and may be unsuitable above an exposed product stream.
Will any GRP tolerate pressure washing?
Confirm the product, surface and connection details against the actual pressure, temperature and cleaning method. Retain the agreed maintenance instructions.
Send the requirement.
Start the engineering review.
Record the available dimensions, loads, supports and site constraints using the design-input guide. Keep your notes with the latest drawings, then send the project information to Kev or Ashleigh for support.
Send the latest revision with photographs and the scope you need: design, supply, fabrication or installation.
Send your drawings →
Prepare a useful project pack
Include the access area, task, outline geometry, operating conditions and installation window. Mark unknown inputs so they can be resolved in review.
Review the platform design inputs →The brief records requirements; it does not calculate or approve the structure.
