Solid top GRP grating
A covered surface.
Access designed in.
Solid top flooring for access platforms, covers and working routes. Coordinate the supporting structure, drainage and removable panels as part of one floor design.

Why choose a covered surface?
Decide what the floor
needs to separate.
A solid top changes the relationship between the walking route and the space below. Define the purpose of the covered surface, then detail its joints, edges and access openings accordingly.
Working platforms
Provide a continuous top surface around equipment while coordinating the load-bearing frame, guarding and service interfaces.
Trenches & local covers
Plan removable sections above services. Define the loads, support arrangement and safe method of opening and reinstatement.
Mezzanine & access floors
Coordinate the floor with the supporting structure, boundaries and route transitions. Identify any fire or specialist performance requirement.
Solid top grating and supported overlay plate are different product routes. QuartzGrip® surface overlays improve an existing supporting surface; a spanning floor needs its own structural design.
Water, debris & interfaces
Close the surface.
Plan where water goes.
A covered top does not make the whole floor watertight. Drainage and containment depend on the joints, penetrations, perimeter and the complete detail.
Falls & discharge
Identify wet use, washdown and weather exposure. Coordinate falls and drainage outlets so water is not left to collect on the walking surface.
Panel joints
Agree joint dimensions and any sealing requirement. Allow for movement and access; confirm sealant compatibility where a sealed detail is proposed.
Service penetrations
Detail pipe and equipment openings with their supporting edges. Identify where liquid or debris may pass through and how the area below is protected.
Containment requirements
State any need to retain liquids, vapour, dust or small objects. Do not assume a solid panel alone satisfies a containment or enclosure requirement.
Surface performance
Review the finish with contaminants, footwear, cleaning and route gradient. Request relevant slip evidence for the actual product and conditions.

Structural selection
Specify the panel
and its support.
The VGRP-DS-29 reference lists solid top depths of 29, 42 and 54 mm. The choice depends on the exact product, loads and supporting arrangement.
Clear span & width
Record the unsupported distance and panel dimensions. The reference separates 1.0 m and 1.2 m widths; confirm the correct design basis.
Load cases
Identify distributed, point and wheel loads, including temporary use. Agree the contact areas and project serviceability criteria.
Cut-outs & bearing
Coordinate service openings and panel edges with support lines. Confirm the bearing and restraint for the fabricated layout.
Request the current checked load and deflection information before selecting a depth. Do not infer capacity from a photograph or panel thickness alone.
Designed to be opened when needed
Make removable access
part of the specification.
Plan the size and weight of removable sections around the maintenance task. The opening method, surrounding route and reinstatement checks belong in the detail.
Handling
Confirm the finished panel weight, lifting points and handling method. Allow working space and a suitable place to put the removed panel.
Restraint
Select fixings and recessed fittings that suit the panel and support. Distinguish planned removability from unintended movement or lifting.
Open condition
Define how the opening is protected during maintenance. Keep the access method and reinstatement checks with the operating information.
Frame & substrate
Review support reactions, connections and anchor selection. Survey the supporting asset and agree testing where its condition or the fixing design requires it.
Panel identification
Mark removable locations and the accepted drawing revision. Record the direction, fixing arrangement and any special lifting requirement.
Inspection & handover
Check seating, restraint, joints and edges before use. Provide the relevant cleaning, inspection and alteration information for the installed arrangement.
Technical information & next steps
Build the floor package
around the evidence.
Bring the drawing, loading and access requirements together. Identify the product and performance records needed before fabrication.
Design inputs
Resolve the structural arrangement and connection to the supporting asset.

The receiving team needs to understand the removable panels as well as the permitted use.
Questions about solid top flooring.
Is solid top grating waterproof?
A covered panel does not establish a watertight floor. Review joints, penetrations, edges and drainage against the project’s actual requirement.
Can it be used as a removable cover?
It can form part of a designed cover arrangement. Confirm loads, span, supports, restraint, handling and protection while the cover is open.
Can vehicles or plant travel over it?
Only where the exact loads, contact areas, dynamic effects and supporting arrangement have been specifically designed and verified. A generic depth is not a vehicle rating.
Is it the same as anti-slip flat plate?
No. Flat plate overlays generally rely on a supporting surface. Solid top grating selection must identify the structural product and its proposed span and supports.
What should I send Vital?
Send the floor or cover plan, loads, clear spans and supporting details. Include drainage, removable access, environment and any containment or fire requirements.
Send the floor plan.
Define the complete package.
Share the loads, drainage and maintenance requirements. Ask Vital to review the panel, support and access details for your proposal.
