Standard mesh GRP grating
Standard mesh GRP grating.
Complete floor design.
Specify standard open-mesh GRP grating for industrial walkways and platforms. Review 25mm, 38mm and 50mm options alongside the other documented depths, then match the exact panel to the clear span, point loads, deflection and supports.

Choose the floor around its use
Start with the route.
Then select the mesh.
The opening pattern affects drainage, visibility and what can pass through the floor. The supporting arrangement determines how the selected panel can carry the specified loads.
Maintenance access
Define the people, tools and equipment using the route. Identify working positions, removable panels and any temporary construction loads.
Objects & openings
Consider dropped objects and activity beneath the floor. Confirm the clear mesh opening against the project requirement rather than relying on a product-family name.
Drainage & cleaning
Plan where water and debris go. Check the area beneath the grating and provide access for inspection and cleaning.
Where a smaller surface opening or a closed surface is needed, compare mini mesh, micro mesh and solid top grating. A different mesh does not remove the need for a structural review.
Depth, span & deflection
Read the table
with its design basis.
The library’s VGRP-DS-32 sheet lists five panel depths and separates 1000 mm and 1200 mm wide grating. Confirm the current product and applicable table before selecting a panel.
| Panel depth | Listed self-weight | Design review |
|---|---|---|
| 25 mm | 12 kg/m² | Confirm clear span and the governing load case. |
| 30 mm | 14.2 kg/m² | Check the specified panel width and restraint. |
| 38 mm | 19 kg/m² | Coordinate supports, openings and serviceability. |
| 50 mm | 21.7 kg/m² | Review handling weight and support reactions. |
| 60 mm | 51 kg/m² | Confirm the exact product and current technical data. |
Clear span
The sheet describes unsupported span for unfixed grating. Match its support assumptions to the proposed arrangement.
Load type
Point load and uniformly distributed load are separate cases. The sheet uses kg and kg/m²; agree consistent engineering units for the design.
Deflection
The sheet states a 1% deflection basis, L/100. Confirm whether this satisfies the project’s serviceability requirement.
Depth alone does not establish an installed floor capacity. Ask for the current checked load data for the exact panel, span and loading, including cut-outs and any more demanding deflection criterion.

Supports, restraint
and service openings.
Resolve panel joints and penetrations before fabrication. Keep the support layout and panel schedule on the same drawing revision so that trimmed edges and removable zones remain coordinated.
Bearing & support lines
Confirm the supporting member, bearing length and panel orientation. Identify unsupported edges and additional supports required around openings.
Cut-outs & panel layout
Locate pipes, ducts and access openings accurately. Review the remaining load-carrying material, edge distances and local reinforcement or support before cutting.
Hold-down & removable access
Select the fixing for the mesh, depth and support. Distinguish restraint of the panel from anchorage of the supporting frame; plan safe removal and reinstatement.
Substrate & anchors
Check the supporting asset and its condition. Agree anchor selection, edge distances and any required pull testing with the fixing design.
Handling & installation
Use the actual fabricated panel dimensions and weight to plan handling. Follow the agreed cutting, edge-treatment and installation instructions for the selected product.
Surface & environment
Specify performance
for the real conditions.
Colour and appearance are useful selection details. Slip, chemical and fire performance need evidence for the specific product and application.
Walking surface
Identify wet conditions, contaminants, footwear and route gradients. Request the applicable slip-test information and agree inspection and cleaning requirements.
Chemical exposure
Provide substance, concentration, temperature and contact conditions. Select the resin and review the connections against the actual environment.
Fire requirements
State the required test method and classification. A general fire-retardant description does not establish the performance of every panel or complete floor assembly.
Electrical & specialist duties
Identify any insulation, static-control or other specialist requirement. Do not infer a tested rating from GRP material alone.
Request a representative sample to review the surface and finish alongside the technical information.

From panel to access system
Resolve the frame.
Then release the panels.
The supporting layout is part of the flooring specification. Survey the existing geometry, coordinate bearing lines and check how the structure connects to the building.
Release the panel schedule against the accepted arrangement. Mark panel locations, removable sections and service openings so that fabrication and installation use the same information.

Once the product and design basis are agreed, give each panel a reference that matches the layout drawing. Record finished dimensions, support lines, service openings, removable sections and the fixing arrangement. Include the drawing revision so prepared panels can be checked against the intended location.
Keep cut-outs with the support detail
A pipe opening or notch may change the remaining load-carrying area. Show its position and dimensions before fabrication, together with any additional supports. Coordinate grating fixings and restraint with the panel and receiving frame.
Separate delivery from installation requirements
State whether panels are supplied for installation by others or form part of an installed package. Include site access, unloading, panel identification and any phased delivery requirements. For renewing an existing floor, use the replacement planning guide alongside the panel schedule.
Questions before specification.
What is standard mesh GRP grating?
It is open-mesh glass reinforced plastic flooring used in access floors, platforms and walkways. The openings allow through-drainage and visibility below. Select the panel, supports and fixings together for the loads, span, surface and exposure requirements.
Should I choose 25 mm, 38 mm or 50 mm grating?
Compare the current load and deflection table for the exact panel and clear span. The depth options listed above also include 30 mm and 60 mm. Choose against the governing load case, deflection limit and handling requirements; depth alone does not establish the installed capacity.
Can I select standard mesh by thickness alone?
No. Confirm panel width, clear span, support, loading and deflection requirements. Openings and restraint also affect the arrangement.
Is the listed self-weight the weight of a complete platform?
No. It describes the panel per square metre in the referenced sheet. Add the frame, guarding, connections and other components when assessing the full structure or handling plan.
Does open mesh prevent all dropped objects?
No. Check the clear opening against the site requirement and consider the work below the floor. A smaller mesh or other measures may be needed.
Can panels be cut around services?
They can be prepared to a reviewed layout. Confirm the remaining panel geometry and any additional support before fabrication or site alteration.
