GRP Paper Mill Wet-End Access Platforms
Wet-end access platforms.
Plan around the maintenance task.
GRP paper-mill wet-end access platforms for inspection, cleaning and service work. Coordinate chemical exposure, supports and shutdown installation.
Choose the access area.
Machine-side service decks
Align the deck with inspection and service positions while retaining the machinery supplier’s clearances. Check the open condition of guards and covers so the working position remains usable during maintenance.
Explore the system →Approach stairs and landings
Connect the service floor and deck without restricting emergency routes or moving plant. Allow for the tools and protective equipment used on the route and for changes in level beside the machine.
Explore the system →Pipe and valve access
Bring recurring valve and instrument tasks into the defined service position. Keep the support structure clear of removable pipe sections and allow access to joints and drains.
Explore the system →Choose the system around the duty.
GRP grating and flooring
Select the surface, openings and resin system for the cleaning regime and working environment. Confirm the span and point-load requirements for each deck zone.
View the product guidance →Maintenance access assemblies
Coordinate platforms, stairs and stepovers with the equipment service envelope, clear route and handling requirements.
View the product guidance →Connection details
Resolve bearing, restraint, brackets and anchors against retained steel or concrete. Preserve access for inspection in the completed arrangement.
View the product guidance →Build the brief around the working task.
The wet end presents several access needs within a compact working area: checking process conditions, reaching fittings and maintaining components around a running production line. The access design starts with the permitted task and machine state. Identify where an operator stands during routine checks and where maintenance requires an isolated machine, removed guarding or component withdrawal. Keep those requirements visible in the platform layout.
Start with the site information
Bring plans, photographs and the equipment supplier’s maintenance clearances. Identify the working position, the route used to reach it and the supporting structure. Vital can help coordinate survey, design information, fabrication and installation around that brief.
Survey and site capture →Resolve the interfaces before fabrication.
Process and cleaning exposure
Provide chemical names, concentrations, operating temperatures and washdown conditions. Review compatibility for the grating resin, exposed cut edges and metallic connections rather than treating the entire wet end as one exposure.
Fibre, water and deposits
Consider how fibres and deposits reach the deck and supports. Select openings and finish with the cleaning method and footwear, and retain drainage paths and inspection access below.
Machinery interfaces
Coordinate access with guarding, isolation points and movement envelopes. A platform handrail does not replace a machine guard, and a change in standing height can change reach to hazards.
Specify the complete load path.
Make the loading explicit
List personnel, tools and temporary component loads at the actual working positions. Define any wheel loads, lifting reactions or laydown zones separately. Agree clear spans and deflection criteria with the retained structure and any vibration-sensitive equipment interfaces.
Review the design requirements →Check the support and fixing detail
Inspect retained steel for corrosion and section loss, and assess concrete condition where anchors are proposed. Agree bracket and restraint details without assuming process-machine frames can accept new access reactions. Plan fixing installation and verification around the shutdown and plant restrictions.
Request the supporting information →Plan the installation and the next maintenance visit.
Use the shutdown plan to establish survey access, fabrication releases and the sequence for removing existing deck sections. Coordinate temporary access and protection with the plant team. Inspect service clearances, drainage, restraint and component identification before the route returns to use.
CAD, structural design and BIM →What should the handover retain?
Keep the agreed drawings, component identification, permitted use, inspection information and maintenance instructions together. Record how future alterations to services, equipment or supports will be reviewed before work starts.
Survey, design and installation support →Connect the specification with the evidence.
Standards and site requirements
Agree the machinery supplier’s access specification and the applicable parts of BS EN ISO 14122 for permanent machinery access. Define structural actions, serviceability and guarding requirements for the complete assembly. Coordinate the arrangement with the plant assessment under PUWER; HSE maintenance guidance explains the wider maintenance and isolation context.
Define the package boundary
Process performance, machine guarding and safe isolation remain coordinated responsibilities outside the access assembly. Identify any unusually hot, chemically aggressive or vibration-sensitive zones in the enquiry rather than extending one material assumption across the machine.
Questions to resolve before ordering.
Can existing support steel be retained?
Yes where its condition, geometry and capacity are assessed for the replacement arrangement. Survey before finalising panel sizes and fixing details.
Is one GRP resin suitable throughout the wet end?
Provide the local exposure schedule so the proposed material can be reviewed. Adjacent areas can have different cleaning and temperature conditions.
Can installation fit within a planned shutdown?
Share the access window, removal scope and survey information early so fabrication and installation can be coordinated against the programme.
Send the requirement.
Start the engineering review.
Record the available dimensions, loads, supports and site constraints using the design-input guide. Keep your notes with the latest drawings, then send the project information to Kev or Ashleigh for support.
Send the latest revision with photographs and the scope you need: design, supply, fabrication or installation.
Send your drawings →
Prepare a useful project pack
Include the access area, task, outline geometry, operating conditions and installation window. Mark unknown inputs so they can be resolved in review.
Review the platform design inputs →The brief records requirements; it does not calculate or approve the structure.
