Vital GRP | Engineered sector access

GRP maintenance access for prisons and custodial estates

Custodial buildings and their support compounds depend on ventilation, water, power, drainage and other services that must be maintained. New-build, conversion and refurbishment programmes make the access task more urgent, but each location has its own operational controls. Vital GRP’s role is the engineered maintenance-access package—not prison construction or the approval of security measures.

Where access can be considered

Plant compounds may need platforms around pumps, tanks or ventilation equipment. Roof plant may need a defined route and guarded working position. Ducts and trenches may need covers that can be lifted by authorised teams without creating uncontrolled loose components. Back-of-house service risers may need an access deck designed around the riser opening, load and fixing substrate. Prisoner-facing or other high-risk positions require an estate-specific security review; they are not suitable for a generic product recommendation.

What the designer needs

Record the precise maintenance task, user and equipment loads, clear span, permissible deflection, support condition and fixing constraints. State who authorises removal of panels or gates, how components are restrained and inspected, and whether the area is washed down or exposed to chemicals. Resolve resin, fire and electrical requirements against the project specification. “Non-conductive” is not a substitute for electrical design or testing of the installed arrangement.

Installation is part of design

Early agreement on escorting, tool and material controls, delivery screening, working hours, temporary protection and plant shutdowns can determine whether a one-piece platform is practical or preassembled modules are preferable. A controlled drawing issue and component schedule helps subsequent maintenance and alterations.

Enquire with a safe brief

Send the non-sensitive task, rough geometry, loads and procurement scope to Vital’s project team; share restricted drawings through the project’s approved channel. See Justice & Secure Estates and platforms and walkways.

Match the maintenance task to the system

Plant compounds

Define a guarded GRP platform or walkway around pumps, tanks and ventilation equipment, with clear maintenance envelopes and a checked support frame.

Roof and riser access

Plan the approach route, riser opening, load-bearing surface and edge protection together; keep back-of-house access distinct from prisoner-facing areas.

Trench and service covers

Set panel load, support, lifting method, restraint and authorised removal process before specifying a cover.

Questions custodial-estate teams ask

Can GRP be used in a prison?

For a defined maintenance location, GRP can be assessed as part of a complete access design. The estate operator must approve security-sensitive positions and component controls.

Does GRP have an anti-ligature or anti-climb rating?

No blanket claim is made. These requirements are site-specific and apply to the complete installed arrangement, not the material alone.

What should we send before a survey?

A non-sensitive task description, rough dimensions, loads, operating restrictions and available support information are enough to begin. Restricted drawings should use the project’s approved channel.
