GRP plant, roof and riser access for courts and tribunals
Court and tribunal estates contain plant, roofs, ducts and risers that often sit inside ageing or constrained buildings. A service-access package should improve the maintenance task without obstructing public circulation, staff areas, secure routes or hearing operations. Vital GRP can coordinate survey, structural detailing, fabrication and installation for defined back-of-house and plant-service tasks.

The common access problems
Riser openings need a walking surface and support detail matched to the opening, substrate and service changes. Roof equipment may need a safe approach and working position, with loading and guarding designed together. Ventilation and cooling upgrades can alter plant clearances and maintenance routes. Trench or chamber covers need explicit load, lift and restraint requirements. Existing buildings may impose delivery-size limits or require short installation windows.
A court is not a standard industrial site
Map public, staff and secure circulation with the facilities team before proposing a route. Confirm access windows, noise, dust, temporary protection and the principal contractor’s arrangements. Where a building is listed or otherwise constrained, the relevant approvals and existing structure must be checked before fixing design. Do not publish security-sensitive plans or imply that a material choice alone satisfies an HMCTS security standard.
Specification and handover
Provide the opening and plan dimensions, point and distributed loads, desired deflection criterion, use conditions, supporting structure and equipment clearances. Handover should retain approved drawings, component identification, permitted use and inspection guidance. Changes to services or supports trigger a fresh design review.
Send the scope to Vital’s project team, or begin with survey and site capture. Related routes: riser systems and Justice & Secure Estates.
Design around the building’s circulation
Riser flooring
Survey openings and supporting structure, then coordinate GRP riser decks or removable panels with changing building services and the permitted maintenance route.
Roof plant
Position maintenance walkways and guarded working areas around equipment clearances, existing roof loading and safe access windows.
Service trenches
Specify cover loads, support ledges, lifting, restraint and inspection access without obstructing public, staff or secure circulation.
Questions for court-estate projects
Can works be installed while the court operates?
Possibly, but the facilities team and principal contractor must agree access windows, noise, dust, protection, delivery and any plant shutdown.
Is the same detail suitable for every court?
No. Existing substrate, listed-building constraints, security arrangements and service layouts make survey and project-specific design essential.
What information is needed for a riser-floor enquiry?
Opening dimensions, support condition, service clearances, point and distributed loads, fire/resin requirements and the proposed maintenance task.
