01 · Challenge

Resolve the floor and ladder as one system.

The UCL project photographs show permanent open-mesh GRP flooring and a fixed GRP ladder installed within a narrow service-riser environment. The floor, support members and vertical access route are arranged around existing services and the available opening.

This is a connected access problem. Ladder clearance, the stepping-off position, the floor opening, support zones and service penetrations all influence one another. Treating them as a single coordinated system helps avoid clashes and unusable access at completion.

02 · Specification

Coordinate the opening and stepping-off position.

Permanent floor

Open-mesh panels create a defined working and inspection surface within the services zone.

Ladder interface

The fixed ladder is aligned with the opening and floor so the transition between vertical and horizontal access is resolved.

Restricted geometry

GRP support members and panel edges fit around services within a narrow riser footprint.

03 · Delivery

Fit permanent access around the services.

Riser access depends on accurate opening information and close coordination with services. The installed system shows how panel layout, support members and ladder position can be brought together in a compact assembly. The non-conductive, corrosion-resistant GRP components provide a practical permanent access solution for a service-heavy internal environment.

04 · Outcome

Horizontal and vertical access working together.

The riser has a defined permanent floor and a coordinated vertical access route, both fitted around the services occupying the opening.
