QuartzGrip® • existing ladder upgrades
GRP ladder rung covers.
Grip for the climb.
Add a gritted contact surface to suitable existing rungs. Match the cover profile, length and fixing detail to your ladder, then coordinate the upgrade with the way the access is used and maintained.

Choose the profile around the existing rung
A focused improvement.
A properly matched fit.
Square & rectangular rungs
Channel profiles can fit suitable flat-faced rungs. Measure the full section, including coatings, and check that the proposed cover seats correctly without rocking or projecting into the stile connection.
Round & tubular rungs
Shaped covers can be considered for round rungs. Confirm the outside diameter and the available contact area. The fixing arrangement must retain the cover against movement and rotation during use.
Cut-to-length packs
Schedule each ladder separately where widths or profiles vary. Vital can prepare covers to agreed lengths and quantities, helping site teams identify the correct pack for each access location.
A photograph and a few clear dimensions
Measure the rung.
Show the whole ladder.
Record dimensions in millimetres. Include a close view of the rung ends and a wider photograph showing the approach, climb and landing. Measure any differences across the ladder rather than assuming every rung is identical.
Measure the usable rung length between the stiles and identify welds, brackets or other obstructions. Confirm the required cover length separately.
For flat-faced rungs, record width and depth; for round rungs, record outside diameter. Note coatings and uneven surfaces that could affect seating.
Give every ladder a reference, count the rungs to be covered and record the ladder material, site exposure and installation window.

The fitting detail does the work
Seat it securely.
Keep it inspectable.
Check the existing ladder before selecting an overlay. Rungs, stiles, welds, brackets and anchors need to remain serviceable. Resolve loose, bent or damaged components as part of the ladder repair or replacement scope.
Substrate and preparation
Identify steel, aluminium, GRP or another rung material, together with its finish and condition. Surface preparation must suit the selected fixing system and the product instructions. Record oil, moisture, corrosion products or coatings that could affect adhesion or seating.
Fixing selection
Agree adhesive, mechanical fixing or a combined method for the actual profile. Confirm curing conditions, fastener compatibility and inspection access. Do not introduce drilling into an existing ladder without the responsible party accepting the modification.
Finished climbing geometry
Review the added cover thickness, foot contact, hand grip and clearance behind the rungs. Check the first and last rung transitions, gates and any fall-protection equipment. Inspect for movement, lifted edges and interference before the route returns to use.
Match the scope to the condition
Surface upgrade or wider renewal?
Sound ladder, unsuitable surface
A rung-cover proposal can address the contact surface where the existing ladder and access arrangement remain suitable. Confirm profile, finish, fixing and cleaning requirements together.
Explore the anti-slip range →Damaged ladder or poor access arrangement
Include repairs or a replacement ladder where the structure, geometry or landing needs attention. A cover does not restore structural capacity or make an unsuitable climb acceptable.
Plan a complete ladder system →
Specify the actual conditions
Grip, exposure
and ongoing care.
Tell us about rain, washdown, oils, process chemicals, salt exposure and temperature. Choose the GRP, grit finish and fixing materials against that environment. A gritted surface still needs cleaning and inspection; contamination and ice require their own operating controls.
Evidence for the selected cover
Request the current product information, relevant slip-resistance evidence and installation instructions. A test result should identify the product, method and conditions. A result from a flat pedestrian surface should not automatically be presented as proof of performance on a curved ladder rung.
The ladder’s design basis
ISO 14122-4:2016 covers fixed ladders for machinery access within its stated scope. Review a retrofit against the requirements applying to the existing ladder and asset. Ordinary GRP covers do not confer an electrical-insulation rating on the ladder assembly.
Inspection and replacement
Retain access to inspect the ladder beneath and around the covers. Check grit wear, damage, contamination, movement and the fixing condition. Follow the agreed maintenance instructions and record replacements against the ladder reference. HSE ladder inspection guidance provides supporting context for checks and accessory instructions.
Request the technical information →Questions before you order.
Can covers be fitted to an existing metal ladder?
Suitable existing steel or aluminium rungs can be considered once their condition, shape, dimensions and proposed fixing are known. Send photographs of the ladder and rung connections so the scope can be reviewed.
Are yellow covers the only option?
Yellow is a familiar high-visibility choice. Confirm the current available colours and grit finish for the selected profile; assess contrast against the ladder and lighting rather than choosing colour in isolation.
Can Vital supply and install them?
Discuss supply-only covers, prepared packs or installation support as part of a wider access package. State the number of ladders, location, working access and permitted shutdown so the scope can be agreed.
Do I need to replace every rung cover at once?
Record the existing condition and coverage. A partial replacement needs compatible profiles, secure fixing and a consistent usable climbing arrangement. Include the condition of neighbouring covers in the review.

Send your rung schedule.
Get a defined supply proposal.
Send Kev or Ashleigh the ladder references, rung measurements, quantities and photographs. Include exposure, access restrictions and whether you need loose covers, prepared packs or installation support.
Download the fillable brief, record the rung details and save a completed copy to send with your photographs. We can review the profile, fixing information and scope needed for a useful quotation. If dimensions are uncertain, identify the site survey you need rather than filling in assumed measurements.
